Demolition

City Salvage Contractors are a hands-on demolition business with fourteen staff.  We started in the 1980s as a small business focusing on salvaging materials from demolition jobs.

In 1989 the business expanded by opening a demolition yard in the historic drainage board buildings in Tuam Street (former No 1 Pumping Station).  Our demolition yard, The Pumphouse, started recycling materials from our own demolition jobs, as well as buying in stock from others.

Over the years the business built up with the addition of more staff and machinery.  Many residential and commercial demolitions were completed including numerous Red Zone demolitions resulting from the Canterbury earthquakes.  When the new asbestos licencing requirements came in we were able to gain licences to remove both friable and non-friable asbestos and we now are still going strong with our experienced crew of  demolition and asbestos removal staff.

5 Key things to consider for your demolition project

What are the key things you need to think about when planning a demolition project?

Most people just focus on the cost.  But there are other things to consider as well.  Here a five important points:

Timing

With tight scheduling requirements in the building industry, it pays to have the demolition work booked in good time.

Asbestos

Most houses built before the year 2000 will have some asbestos materials in them.  This needs to be removed before demolition work can be started.  In most cases the property will need to be surveyed for asbestos by a qualified licenced assessor before the demolition quote can be finalised.

Power Removal

Power needs to be removed before demolition can take place. If this is not booked well in advance it could result in a delayed start date.  If you are organising this it is important to let your power supplier know that you need total removal of power (decommission) for demolition.  You may need to allow up to 3 weeks for this.

Salvage Materials

It is important to be clear if you wish to retain any of the materials from your house or commercial building.  Our demolition quotes are normally based on salvaged materials becoming the property of City Salvage Contracts (the demolition contractor).

Saving Trees and Shrubs

Provided any trees or shrubs you want saved are not in the way of the demolition, we are happy to save them.  You do need to give us advanced warning.  The same situation applies for garden sheds, clotheslines, fencing, paving, etc.  Before we quote the job, let the contractor know exactly what is – and is not – to be removed from the site.
